Robber Nabbed by Boy Scouts


Police arrested a robber with the assistance of members of the public on 12 March 2008 at about 11.50 am at the void deck of Blk 231 Jurong East Street 21.

On 12 March 08 at about 11.20 am, a 64-year-old Chinese woman had entered the lift on the ground floor of Blk 231 Jurong East Street 21 together with the 48-year-old suspect, an unemployed Chinese man. When the lift door opened at the 13th floor, the suspect stood at the door way and snatched away the victim’s gold bracelet on her right wrist. The suspect then demanded for money. When the victim replied that she did not have any money with her, the suspect fled down the stairs.

Immediately the victim took the same lift down to the ground floor and saw the suspect at the void deck and she shouted for help. A passer-by heard the victim’s cry for help and chased after the suspect. He managed to catch hold of him after a short chase. The suspect put up a violent struggle. Subsequently, another five passers-by, including four boy scouts who were going around the neighbourhood looking for jobs, witnessed the incident and immediately came forward to help restrain the suspect. The suspect was handed over to the police and the victim’s gold bracelet valued at S$400/- was recovered at the scene.

The suspect will be charged in court on 14 March 2008 for Robbery under Section 390 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces a jail term of not less than 2 years and not more than 10 years with caning not less than 6 strokes.

The Commander of Clementi Police Division HQ, Superintendent Ng Yeow Boon, would like to commend the two passers-by and the four students for their public spiritedness in assisting Police to apprehend the suspect.
