The Founding of Screaming Eagles Scout Group
Founded in 1985, JSS Scout Troop was formed with the permission of the school Principal, by Troop Leader Pan Mui Fatt, and with the aid of Assistant Troop Leaders, Alexander Joseph (A.J. for short) and Ken. All 3 were former Scouts from Clementi Griffins, and were then, in JSS Pre-U. The first batch of Scouts were recruited from the Sec 1 and 2 levels of JSS.
A second Rover Scout Troop was formed at the same time, with students from the Pre-U Centre that JSS once had. Thus, making JSS Unit a Scout Group. The Rover Troop was lead by Rover Troop Leader Chris.
Both Troops combined to create the Unit "Crowned Griffins".
The Pre-U Centre in JSS subsequently closed officially after 2 years and the Rover Scout Troop was dissolved, with the Group collapsing to just a Scout Troop. The Leaders also graduated and left for their National Service.
A.J., came back to continue leading the Scouts Troop for a while, and decided to adopt the U.S. 101st Airborne Division's name for the Troop, "Screaming Eagles".
This was how the "Screaming Eagles" came about, also adopting the Airborne Division's motto of "Ever Soaring High". 4 years after the Troop's formation, Eugene Sim was appointed the Troop Leader.
Over the years, "Screaming Eagles" has survived only because of it's patron, Miss Chan Choy Ping, who became a teacher in JSS and kept the Unit afloat as it's teacher-in-charge. Without Miss Chan, the Scout Troop had been struggling against the danger of being closed down, with the lack of experienced Adult Leaders. Miss Chan later served as an Assistant District Commissioner for Jurong District as well, and subsequently stepped-up as the District Commissioner.
In 2006, we saw the turn-around of "Screaming Eagles" when the Troop won the Jurong District's "Best Unit Award", as well as the District's "Most Outstanding Scout Award".
In 2007, we see the former glory restored to the Unit. With the kind permission of the current Principal, Miss Tham, we formed a Venture Scout Troop, and under the strong leadership of the teacher-in-charge, Mr Stanley Tan, the Unit has breached the stigma and achieved it's first ever, Silver for Frank Cooper Sands Award.
At the end of 2007, the Venture Scout Unit expanded to become a Venture and Rover Scout Unit, the Screaming Eagle Venture and Rover Unit... fondly known as SEVaR. In a second year running, the District's "Most Outstanding Scout Award" was again clinched.
With a bold step forward, the Group adopted the Cub Scout Unit in Lakeside Primary School, which became Screaming Eagle Cubs, in an Amalgation Ceremony on 23 August 2008. It was also in 2008, that the Group achieved it's first Gold for Frank Cooper Sands Award. We then saw a change-over of teachers-in-charge, as Mr Stanley Tan handed over to Mr Kesavan and Mr Sim Sze Wai.
